Theatre Design Portfolio for 15 - 17 Year Olds

About

Nottingham Trent University
Monday 25 - Friday 29 July 2022
Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm, one week
Price: £475

This practical and technical course is ideal for anyone who's interested in theatre and performance design.

Whilst open to everyone, it'll be of particular interest to those who might be considering future studies in design and looking to enhance their application and portfolio with a unique, innovative theatre design project.

Looking at examples of professional designers' work, you'll learn about the process a theatre designer goes through in the development of a design; from initial sketches to a finished show.

You'll explore some of the many areas that theatre designers cover including research, drawing, model making and costume design.

During the course you will:

- analyse a set text and go on to develop your own brief that reflects your individual interests
- undertake research to develop your design in 2D
- create mood boards, storyboards and sketches
- visit a theatre in Nottingham
- take part in short, hands-on activities to help inspire and enhance your approach to creative thinking
- work in 3D to create a sketch model which will help you communicate your idea.

Throughout the week you'll be encouraged to share ideas and invite constructive, critical feedback from your tutor and fellow students.

The course will take place in the design studios as well as on location to explore less traditional performance spaces that will inspire your project.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course you'll have a sketchbook of research, ideas, design developments and decisions.

Your sketch model will be evidence of how you have refined your sketches into a final performance space for the set text, all of which will demonstrate your interest and understanding of design for performance and how you have a personal approach to working in both 2D and 3D, which you can add to your portfolio.

Level: Open to all

Entry requirement: You should have an enthusiasm for theatre and an interest in developing your creative and technical skills.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You'll find bright studio and workshop spaces to develop your ideas and create exciting work.

You'll also have access to the library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Here's what previous attendees have said:

'It was a great insight into the everyday work of a theatre designer.' RK

'Really good course - would recommend this.' AW

Tutor Profile: Dorrie Scott graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a first class degree in theatre design.
