Born at Arnot Hill House in 1807, Anthony Keyworth tells the fascinating story of the incredible life and works of Thomas Hawksley, a water engineer who pioneered the system of clean flowing water for all, which in turn saved many thousands of lives.
A genius way beyond his time who, at just 23 years of age, undertook the construction of a new pumping station on Trent Bridge. In 1832 Hawksley personally turned on the tap which supplied water under pressure twenty four hours a day, to the many streets and alleyways and houses in Nottingham, so that at any hour, the people of Nottingham could have clean tap water.
Rising to national prominence, Hawksley was the leading British Water Engineer of the nineteenth century, personally responsible for upwards of some 150 water-supply schemes in the British Isles and overseas.
