About

Jonathan Tilbrook Conductor
Mozart Die Entführung aus dem Serail: Overture
Alexander Kolassa New Work
Milhaud La création du monde
Beethoven Symphony No.6 ‘Pastoral’

The University Philharmonia opens the academic year with the sparkling overture to Mozart’s ‘Turkish’ opera. Milhaud’s La création du monde was commissioned as a ballet based on African creation mythology in 1923 but it provided the opportunity to write in the jazz idiom which he had first encountered in New York a year earlier. A new work by postgraduate student Alexander Kolassa receives its premiere and the programme is completed with Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 still one of music’s most evocative depictions of nature.

The concert finishes at approximately 9.10pm
