About

Various Locations
Friday 11 - Sunday 13 May 2018

Beneath this historic building, cave cellars root deep into the sandstone cliff, and like many of Nottingham's 800+ caves, they have for centuries been used for storage of ale. Located in these winding passages is an old cockfighting pit and part of the Castle Gaol was said to be housed in the cellars at one time. This included the condemned cell, a small cell with a very low ceiling with small holes drilled to allow a little air to flow through. The Gaoler would have sat just outside the cells on the ‘Gaoler’s Chair’ which was etched out of the rock and can still be seen today.

Informal cellar tours are available, giving you a short detailed history of The Trip and information on its extensive range of ales. You will see the speaking tube that was bored through to the castle for ordering beer and the cock pit, the extensive number of barrels and much more, but most importantly you will be able to pour your own pint!

Please Note: You may want to book in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during busy hours, but ask at the bar and the staff will accommodate you if they can. To book call 0115 947 3171.

Please Note: Cave floors may be uneven and some ceilings are low. Please wear appropriate footwear if possible.

In celebration of Nottingham’s 800 caves, #CaveCity invites you to explore this mysterious terrain which has lain beneath the city for hundreds of years. With tours, talks, activities and experiences throughout the city, including some of the city's lesser known cave locations, please visit the Cave City: Nottingham Underground Festival page for a full list of events, or check out the festival itinerary to plan your weekend
