You are here > Explore > Nottingham > The Lace Market and Hockley
With over one thousand years of human history under its streets, Hockley and the Lace Market are the oldest areas in the city. Making up part of the Creative Quarter, these districts each have their own unique character, and today the area merges history with independent culture, revealing the spirit of modern Nottingham.
Once the city’s industrial centre, the Lace Market produced intricate lace, which was renowned throughout the world and put Nottingham on the fashion map long before designer Paul Smith opened his first boutique in 1970. The grand red brick warehouses and factories are now home to creative businesses, upmarket bars and a great selection of restaurants such as the much beloved Annie's Burger Shack. A perfect respite from the city, you might just want to get lost in its cinematic streets - we guarantee you’ll stumble upon a hidden gem or two.
Meanwhile, Hockley exudes bohemian charm and buzzes day and night with an eclectic mix of quirky businesses. Vintage clothing emporiums nestle amongst second-hand bookshops and bijoux boutiques, stylish hair salons and tattoo studios. Mysterious bars hide in plain sight or seclude themselves down alleyways, while cafes and restaurants spill out onto the city street. The neighbourhood comes to life with carnival spirit for various festivals including Pride and the much-loved multi-venue music festival Hockley Hustle.
Around the Hockley and Lace Market area, you will also find a number of attractions and entertainment venues, including the award-winning National Justice Museum, Nottingham Contemporary and Motorpoint Arena Nottingham.
