Weekend Itinerary On A Budget

Weekend Itinerary On A Budget

In 2017 Trip Advisor named Nottingham one of the best value cities for a city break and being a couple of hours from London you’ll find your money goes a little further in our great city. If you're in Nottingham for a short weekend break and would like to take in some history, have a good time and at the same time not break the bank then this is a perfect itinerary for you.

This useful trail gives you a handy list with everything you need to plan your trip, including travel times, addresses, and links to the listing pages to find out more about the attractions. To begin creating your itinerary, click the 'Add All Items to Itinerary' button and from there, you can either keep all the destinations in the pre-prepared list, or amend the itinerary by clicking on the places you are interested in.

You can then rename, email, or print the list so it’s always to hand. You can also save your itinerary to view on your mobile phone and tablet.

Day 1 | Friday

1. Check into the quirky Igloo Hybrid Ho[s]tel located right in the beating heart of Nottingham's City Centre.

2. Head to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem - England's oldest inn, and join their Cellar Cave Tour that covers cave cellars root deep into the sandstone cliff used for centuries for storage of ale. Located in these winding passages is an old cockfighting pit, and part of the Castle Gaol was said to be housed in the cellars at one time too. This included the condemned cell, a small cell with a very low ceiling with small holes drilled to allow a little air to flow through and more. You may want to book in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during busy hours, but ask at the bar and the staff will accommodate you if they can. To book call 0115 947 3171.

3. Explore The Bell Inn - one of the oldest inns in England, soak in its old fashioned pub atmosphere and stay for a mouth-watering pub lunch.

Day 2 | Saturday

1. Do some souvenir shopping and stock up on those ever so important fridge magnets at Nottingham Tourism Centre or Dukki Design. If you decide to splash some more cash head to one of delightful independent shops such as Debbie Bryan, Stick and Ribbon or explore a selection of shops in The Exchange shopping centre.

2. Join Robin Hood himself on the Robin Hood Town Tour to learn all about Nottingham's rebellious past and the legend of Robin Hood, which is still very much alive. The tour starts 2pm at the famous Cross Keys pub, Adults £14.50, Concessions £11 and under 14's £8.

3. Grab some late chippy lunch from Sauce 'Em Chips where you can choose from 20 different well sought-after sauces which are served on the side, drizzled or drenched. You can even top your chips off with hot melted cheese and maybe even add a little pizza sauce. You'll get a small portion for as little as £1.99 and a large one for just £4.75. Have your lunch next to the Robin Hood statue and take some selfies with out famous outlaw.

Day 3 - Sunday

1. Visit Wollaton Hall - the entry to both the hall and Natural History Museum (based inside) is free. Explore this Elizabethan mansion along with its 500 acres of its spectacular gardens and parkland for yourself. You may even bump into a deer or two as you roam around the grounds. While you're there you can also visit Nottingham Industrial Museum, which is located just outside the hall in the old stables. It costs £3 to get in and it's well worth it if you're interested in Nottingham's industrial history and heritage.

Please note: Wollaton Hall is not walking distance from the city centre, but you can get there easily by bus. Take the Orange Line bus Number 36 and you'll be dropped off at one of the gates to Wollaton Park. It will then take you around 13 minutes to walk to the hall as you take in the beautiful scenery of the park. You can buy a 24hr return ticket from the bus driver but make sure you have the exact amount for your ticket ready (£4.20 adult, £2.50 under 19) as drivers don't give out change.

2. Stay onsite and grab some lunch at one of two cafés. You can have your lunch inside the cafés or sit down on the grass or on one of the many benches and have it outside. We recommend the latter.

3. If time allows head back to the city centre and visit Nottingham Contemporary to catch up on the latest from contemporary art trends. Exhibitions at this modern art gallery are on rotation so you're sure to see something new even if you've visited it previously. Entry to Nottingham Contemporary is free.
