Would you like to learn more about the history of Jane Austen and her much-loved characters to inspire your own creative writing?

The quintessentially English style of the Austen's work and the Georgian period are timeless and have gained popularity throughout the years, and continue to do so.

This course will inspire you to write in the style of Austen using the language, devices and genre to take on the point of view of one of her much-loved characters and adapt it to a contemporary setting.

It's ideal for anyone who'd like to improve their creative writing skills so, whether you're an enthusiastic newcomer to the timeless written work of Austen, or a passionate admirer of her work, you'll be able to produce your own written work in her style.

It'll be a great opportunity to add your own imagination to the fascinating enigma of Jane Austen and the charm of her literary work.

Readers of Jane Austen's novels are always eager to learn more about the author's work, her life and the society that gave her ample material for her art.

Austen's most famous work are the novels Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion, and Juvenilia has charm and gives an insight to the author's early work.

You'll read and analyse these novels to take on the point of view of one of the characters with a view to producing your own written piece of work, in the style of Austen, to share with the group.

You'll take part in a group trip to visit Chawton House or Bath, two of the places the author lived and where she wrote her most famous novels.

During the course you will:

•    gain an understanding of the history of Jane Austen and the background to her novels

•    complete engaging exercises set by an expert tutor

•    interact with new people of differing backgrounds

•    explore Nottingham and the local culture and heritage

•    expand your knowledge of the genre, literary devices and format used by Austen

•    practice writing in her style

•    present you writing to fellow students.

This course is also part of the NTU Global Summer School which attracts undergraduate students from colleges around the world.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course you'll have built confidence in verbal, visual and written communication.

Level: Beginner

Entry requirement: No previous experience necessary.

Where you'll learn: You will be studying creative writing in a UNESCO City of Literature, and be based in the School of Arts and Humanities on the City Campus.

You will find modern teaching spaces and quiet study environments to develop your ideas and writing.

You'll also have access to the NTU library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Level: Beginner

Entry requirement: No experience required.

Tutor Profile: Sophia Al Ahmed has a postgraduate degree in English from Nottingham Trent University and a Diploma in English Language Teaching from De Montfort University.

Alongside teaching English, Sofia is a creative writer, having written fictional novels.
