A little off the beaten track, but certainly not to be overlooked, Derby Road is a stylish thoroughfare lined with elegant shop fronts. Packed with a suprisingly varied selection of high-quality independent shops, pubs and cafes, this is one of the city's quieter shopping streets and also contains some of Nottingham's most interesting hidden gems!
Enjoy the breathtaking architeacture of Nottingham Cathedral and wander around the corner to find Nottingham Playhouse. Just outside sits the stunning Sky Mirror, with its ever-changing reflections of the clouds and charming street scenery. Designed by internationally renowned artist Anish Kapoor and installed in 2001, this is a perfect spot for taking a few photographs. Walk for a couple of minutes and you'll find another of Nottingham's unusual sites, The Park Tunnel, which was carved from the sandstone rock in 1855 as the main entrance to the Park Estate.
The Museum of Curiosities has many curious, macabre and haunted items from around the world. This collection has been collected by the owner for many decades from paranormal investigations and his contacts within the world of the macabre.
Back on the main road, green fingered types should check out The Worm that Turned. Selling a beautifull curated selection of items for your garden and home, pick up everything from outdoor furniture, firepits, and BBQs to unique accessories and items such as terrariums, birdbaths and garden art.
Vintage Wines is a well-established independent company, which is recognized as one of the leading suppliers of fine wines and spirits in the midlands. Founded in 1948, their cellars on Derby Road offer a portfolio of selected wines from around the world to satisfy your every requirement from a sumptuous everyday drinking wine to the classic bottle for that special occasion or investment.
The Organ Grinder is a Blue Monkey's pub in Canning Circus (just off Derby Road). You can expect up to nine cask ales are on the bar, most from Blue Monkey, with the occasional great guest beer. In the winter there is a real fire roaring every day - one of the few in the city. There is also a beer garden and a function room available for hire.
The Sir John Borlase Warren is widely regarded as the flagship destination, having the finest ‘secret' beer garden in Nottingham. Lincoln Green took over the site in 2015 and has breathed new life into the pub with an impressive range of cask ales, craft beers, gins and whiskies. Also on offer is a full menu of pub classics, pizzas, specials and the best Sunday Roast in Canning Circus.
Mist Rolling Inn is a micropub half-way up Derby Road. You can enjoy a range of ciders, real ales, lagers, wines and spirits! Long and narrow, the pub has a bar to the rear sporting four handpumps with seating on either side between door and bar.
The Whistle & Flute is an independent pub and bar situated on Derby Road near canning circus. They offer a large selection of real ales, craft beer and fine spirits, all with a warm welcome.
The Hand & Heart is a landmark pub that was built into the sandstone rock. The rear trading area of the Hand & Heart is a natural cave providing a unique ambiance to a traditional English pub. You can expect cask ales from local microbreweries as well as craft beers and wines. They also serve 200 Degrees coffee!
Raglan Road Irish Bar serve a variety of food including sitting in and takeaway options. You can find their full menu on their website, which is full of mouth watering dishes including something for even the most picky of eaters. Their takeaway drinks also include a range of alcoholic options including the likes of Gordon's Pink Gin and bottles of spirits.
Should you need a breather, there are some lovely unique pubs and eateries on Derby Road.
Specialising in Polish & American homestyle cookery, Warsaw Diner serve the best Polish dinners in the whole of Nottingham. In addition to their beloved breakfast menu, they have added some delicious Polish comfort food to their evening offerings, 6pm - 11pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays! Come try their homemade pierogi with various fillings and potato pancakes topped with goulash!
Daya's Kitchen is a takeaway and dine-in offering everything from breakfasts to grills and wraps at fantastic prices. Tough Mary's Bakehouse specialise in fantastic baked goods including pastries, sweets, bread and vegan bakes - but please note they are closed on Monday and Sunday.
Little Brickhouse is a quintessential neighbourhood bistro and natural wine bar. They serve homecooked, seasonal food and offer up plenty of good vibes.
