Dizzy Ink & Jake Kent: Join in Building a Tower

Saturday 21 November 2015 – Sunday 17 January 2016 (Closed Monday & Tuseday)

Earlier this year, Nottingham Castle commissioned Nottingham-based artist Jake Kent and print-collective Dizzy Ink to create new work based on the themes of the V&A touring exhibition A World to Win: Posters of Protest and Revolution.

As part of this commission, Jake Kent & Dizzy Ink worked in collaboration and in response to the ideas of local young people by delivering four days of creative workshops exploring the themes of ‘A World to Win’. These workshops – attended by ESOL learners (English for Speakers of Other Languages) supported by Futures Advice Skills and Employment, Nottingham, Outburst, a LGBTQ youth group and Illuminate, Nottingham City Museums & Galleries young arts collective – were used by the artists as research and content to inform the new commissioned artworks.

Join in Building a Tower takes its name from Citadelle, a story by French philosopher Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that appears in his 1952 book The Wisdom of the Sands. The artists see this exhibition as “a tower, a beacon, or a platform for the exploration of cultural and political relevance within art. If our contemporary dilemma is one of media bias, untrustworthy politicians, constant war and unregulated corporate power, to what extent can art encourage oppositional action in the name of peace, equality and democracy?”

In addition to this exhibition, some of the artwork created within the workshops by the young participants is on display in our unique café table vitrines.
This exhibition was supported using public funding by Arts Council England.
