Nottingham Castle
22 June – 22 August 2021
Access to the exhibition is included in a general admission ticket to Nottingham Castle
Join Nottingham Castle at their new gallery, The Lab, celebrating the emerging and diverse talents of makers, academics and creatives in present-day Nottingham for “Don’t Blame the Blacks”.
73 years to the day since the arrival of Empire Windrush, “Don’t Blame the Blacks” provides an insight into the role Black communities in Nottingham played in combatting racism during, and since, the 1950s.
Learn about how Windrush-generation member, former RAF serviceman and political activist, Oswald George Powe mobilised and motivated the local community to fight workplace discrimination and bring about change at Raleigh Industries, one of the largest employers of black people in post-war Nottingham.
Through the stunning photography of Vanley Burke, video work of Keith Fields and the artefacts of Nottingham Black Archives, “Don’t Blame the Blacks” encapsulates Nottingham during a past fight for racial equality and asks questions about the racial struggles of today.
