Paula Rego was one of the great printmakers and storytellers of our time. She drew inspiration from a vast range of sources, from traditional folklore and fairy tales to literary classics and nursery rhymes, transforming this material into startlingly original and unexpected pictures.
Rego's work tells stories that combine fantasy, imagination, innocence, and cruelty, in order to explore life in all its complexity and mystery. This new exhibition casts a spotlight on her remarkable practice as a graphic artist, and particularly the British literary influences that informed her most ambitious bodies of works that include her famous Nursery Rhymes series.
This exhibition has been curated by Hayward Gallery Touring in association with The Estate of Paula Rego.
