Sunday Walkthrough: Julian Abraham 'Togar' with Andrea Zarza Canova

About

Free Event

Nottingham Contemporary's Gallery One is currently presenting REꓘONCILIATION, the first solo exhibition in a European institution by multidisciplinary artist, musician and social researcher Julian Abraham 'Togar' (b.1987, Indonesia).

In this walkthrough, curator, researcher, and sound archivist Andrea Zarza will illuminate connections between the works in Togar's exhibition and recent writings on sound, listening, and sound recording technologies. By taking the artist's banners with statements such as 'Ears have self-cleaning mechanism' and 'Ears have no self-defense mechanism' as a point of departure, Andrea will situate Togar's sonic world within global and contemporary sound scholarship.

Andrea Zarza Canova is an archivist, curator and researcher based in London. Andrea's curatorial practice is focussed on recontextualising historical sound recordings through listening sessions, radio broadcasts and exhibitions in order to connect their material and sonic content with broader political, social and cultural histories. Currently she is researching for a practice-based, AHRC-funded PhD at the University of Nottingham in collaboration with Nottingham Contemporary. She has curated exhibitions and listening spaces at Southbank Centre, London; Rhubaba Gallery, Edinburgh; nGbK, Berlin; and CentroCentro, Madrid and spoken at Somerset House, London; Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam; TBA21, Madrid; Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan, amongst others.

From 2013 to 2024 she worked as a curator at the British Library's sound archive, working to preserve the collection and open it up to new ways of access through artist residencies and a radio programme on NTS Radio and from 2016 to 2023 she co-ran record label Mana, which published works with an archival and contemporary sound.
