The History of Bestwood - A talk by Andy McKinnon

About

Tuesday 18th November 2025 I 7pm
Venue: Arnold Methodist Church
Tickets: £1.00 for members and £3.00 for non-members

Bestwood, to the north of Nottingham, has a long, fascinating, and varied history. Once the hunting ground of kings, it became the location of a record-breaking coal mine and, more recently, several vast housing developments.

At least seven kings of England can be linked to Bestwood, and so, of course, can the 17th-century socialite, Nell Gwynne.  Nottingham's famous bare-knuckle fighter William Abednego Thompson (1811-1880), better known as 'Bendigo’, also famously fought at Sunrise Hill in Bestwood.

Bendigo was among the last of the great bare-knuckle prize-fighters and was perhaps the champion of all. His fans were many and included such respected members of society as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who even penned a verse to the fighter entitled 'Bendigo's Sermon’.

All are welcome to come and listen to Andy McKinnon's fascinating account of this most interesting area of our county.
