Bonington Theatre, Arnold, Notts
Tickets £15 / £5 student / child with paying adult free
Expect some hard-hitting jazz, blues, Latin, hard-bop and post-bop from this splendid band with local hero and mega music creative Kofi.
Local hero, Nottingham-born, internationally acclaimed, award-winning multi-instrumentalist Tony Kofi is a highly versatile in-demand jazz creative force. No surprise he's a firm favourite whenever he returns to play in Nottingham. We're more than delighted he's performing with this special quartet The Organisation for Jazz Steps at the Bonington.
Line-up: Tony Kofi - baritone saxophone, Simon Fernsby guitar, Pete Whittaker Hammon organ and Pete Cater drums
"The saxophonist applies his full-toned fluency to a set of modernist covers in the company of a rootsy organ trio"Financial Times (FT) review of album The Point
Expect hard-hitting jazz, blues, Latin, hard bop and post-bop that take in some rarely performed classics by the likes of George Russell, Woody Shaw, Duke Pearson, Pepper Adams and others.
"Kofi and his band give the solos a depth and detail that avoids repetition, and make the most of the harmonies that lie underneath. The leader is a commanding presence throughout, preaching the blues, holding notes for maximum impact and always in control when rampaging at speed. Guitarist Simon Fernsby doubles up as foil and rhythmic support and organist Peter Whittaker delivers sophisticated soul alongside sturdy bass pedal lines that lock into Peter Carter's drums." FT review
"One of today's hottest and most innovative quartets" BBC music magazine album of the month 5 stars
