Famous Nottingham pharmaceutical brand, Boots, opened their first store on Goosegate in 1849.
John Boot was originally an agricultural worker who moved to Nottingham to start his new business. His store on Goosegate sold herbal remedies, designed to cure all sorts of ailments and was popular with the poorer classes who could not afford to pay for a doctor. The large iron and glass windows were extremely modern for the era and allowed passersby to get a glimpse of the Boots chemists in action.
After John's death in 1860, his wife Mary and son Jesse continued the business. It expanded rapildly under Jesse who successfully aimed to make Boots a nationwide chain of shops.
The building now houses elegant British-European restaurant The Larder on Goosegate which boasts great views over Hockley.
