The museum houses a unique collection of equestrian-related objects dating from 600 BC to the 20th century, displayed across nine rooms and two passageways. Exhibits explore the historical role of horses in areas such as military life, veterinary practice, agriculture, travel and coaching, racing, and side saddle riding. The collection includes artefacts from Britain, America, India, Africa and beyond, with notable displays of saddles, bits, stirrups and spurs, as well as early illustrated prints. In the courtyard coach house, visitors can see a rare original Mail Coach, one of only a few remaining.
Tours and group visits can be arranged, including a popular hands-on antique object quiz. The museum has also appeared on national television programmes including Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip, and Millionaire Hoarders.
Facilities include a ground-floor gallery of animal art, a courtyard coffee shop serving light lunches and cream teas, and a conference room for up to 54 seated guests. The museum is fully accessible.
The museum also hosts talks, exhibitions and special events throughout the year, including a Side Saddle Exhibition in summer 2026 and a Heritage Open Days exhibition celebrating jockey Charles Wood and the 250th anniversary of the St Leger.
