Djanogly Recital Hall, Lakeside Arts
Tickets: £12
Opening the Beethoven 250 Festival at Lakeside Arts, the prodigiously talented and popular pianist Ji Liu makes a welcome return to Nottingham. Since moving from China to London in 2007, he's won an array of awards and prizes and released four chart-topping albums. His rapport with audiences and his virtuoso technique ensure a thrilling start to the festival.
Ji's programme begins with three of Beethoven's earliest piano sonatas. Dedicated to Haydn and with echoes of Mozart, Sonatas 1 and 2 display all the traits of the young Beethoven in abundance, with strong dynamic contrasts, lyrical themes and virtuoso passages bristling with energy. The humorous and quirky nature of Sonata No. 6 is clearly heard in the opening notes of this masterful, yet underestimated work. Composed immediately after the Eroica Symphony in 1803, the revolutionary 'Waldstein' sonata is among the most dazzlingly brilliant of all Beethoven's middle-period works. Symphonic in conception and scale, it stretches the Sonata to the limits of possibility, exploiting the full range of keyboard effects, ending with a series of trills and triumphant fanfares.
Piano Sonata No.1 in F minor, Op.2 No.1
Piano Sonata No.6 in F major, Op.10 No.2
Piano Sonata No.2 in A major, Op.2 No.2
Piano Sonata No.21 in C major, Op.53 'Waldstein'
