Borne out with Whalebone is an Elizabethan dressing demonstration with Ninya Mikhaila.
The iconic look sported by Queen Elizabeth I and her courtiers towards the end of the sixteenth century featured an elongated narrow waist, contrasted with wide petticoats and large sleeves, often embellished with elaborate surface decoration and topped off with ruffs made from yards of linen and lace. In this dressing demonstration, historical costumier Ninya Mikhaila will show how a lady's outfit was achieved using reconstructed garments, from the underwear out, through the complex layers of dress stiffened with boning and canvas.
Ninya Mikhaila is a historical costumier making high quality period garments for museums and heritage sites. She featured in the six-part BBC television series A Stitch in Time and her film credits include The Lost King starring Harry Lloyd (2022).
