We're back for another Spotlight event, welcoming early career musicians to the stage! This month, we're excited to welcome Alt-jazz collective Flo/ra contemporary jazz quintet led by saxophonist and composer Flo Taylor, Anya Deja A vocalist, pianist, and singer-songwriter who crafts vivid stories through a folky-soul sound, and Ruby, a singer-songwriter who weaves smooth jazz and doo-wop melodies with gentle, thoughtful lyrics.
Flo/ra
"Their improvisational style and intricate compositions are truly captivating." – JORJazz Radio
Flo/ra is a contemporary jazz quintet led by saxophonist and composer Flo Taylor (Ferg's Imaginary Big Band, Goddess Collective). Their music explores themes of neurodivergence, identity and grief through emotionally honest, intricately arranged compositions.
The music draws on influences from classical, spiritual jazz, folk, drum and bass and chant music to avoid comfortable classification, and to express Flo's inability to fit comfortably into boxes themselves. Flo/ra played a recent highlight performance at Lancaster Jazz Festival, where their highly anticipated debut album was recorded.
Lineup Flo Taylor – alto saxophone Callum Greenaway – piano/keyboard Thomas McEwen – guitar Jaden Hart – upright bass Louis Berthoud – drum kit
Anya Deja
A vocalist, pianist, and singer-songwriter who crafts vivid stories through a folky-soul sound. Her lyrical exploration, haunting vocals, and instinctive improvisation create a dreamy, vulnerable atmosphere – pulling listeners into a sonic world that feels both familiar and uncannily new. She draws inspiration from artists such as Nina Simone, Björk, Alfa Mist, Portishead, and Kate Bush.
In November 2025, Anya released her debut single "Purgatory" across all major streaming platforms and is currently developing a collection of new music, including an EP scheduled for release in 2026. Beyond her solo work, she supports local bands and artists – most notably Floral Pattern and Stack Duncan – which has taken her to stages across the Midlands, including The Bodega, The Hairy Dog, and The Night Owl.
Lineup
Anya – piano and vocals
Glenn – bass
Mylie – sax
Sam – drums
Alfie – guitar
Ruby
Ruby, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from London, has a warm, understated style that invites listeners into quiet, reflective moments. Drawing inspiration from Amy Winehouse and 50s girl groups, she weaves smooth jazz and doo-wop melodies with gentle, thoughtful lyrics. Her songs often explore nostalgia and love, creating music that aims to linger softly in the background of your thoughts and conversations. A pianist and songwriter since the age of fourteen, Ruby believes music is an intimate experience, best shared just between a singer and their instrument, offering a calm and soothing space for those who listen.
