New Reality: WAR Through the Ukrainian Lens
To provide you with the best experience, cookies are used on this site. Find out more here.

At this event, you will learn more about the war in Ukraine and the broader questions and challenges it raises within the Ukrainian context.
The focus will not be on the war itself — such as action or patriotic propaganda — but rather on people's fates and on Ukrainian society, which is living through this war in many different roles and circumstances (soldiers, civilians, and refugees), facing new realities and challenges.
As part of this event, several short films will be shown:
"Uncle Tolia" (drama, 30 min) — After the de-occupation of a village, a young Ukrainian veteran visits his uncle, who had once been his guardian. However, the uncle turns out to be less than hospitable and begins to behave suspiciously.
"Brick by Brick" (drama, 15 min) — A young man travels to a front-line village to take his father away from danger, but old grievances prevent them from understanding each other, even as the front line draws near.
"The Rooms We Share" (drama, 20 min) — A Ukrainian woman and her sick daughter become refugees in Germany, where they are warmly welcomed by a local family. Yet the hosts soon sense a certain coldness and alienation in the woman, which creates tension and exposes the pain of being torn from one's home.
There will be discussions and Q&A sessions between the films and after the screening.
The event is organised by AUGB (The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain) in collaboration with Ukrainian Film School (Kyiv, Ukraine), funded by Nottingham City Council, supported by Nottinghamshire County Council.
