Sir Mark Elder - conductor
Alice Coote mezzo-soprano
Ladies of the Hallé Choir and Hallé Children's Choir Mahler Symphony No. 3
Mahler wrote of his Third Symphony that it 'will be something the like of which the world has never heard!…In my symphony the whole of nature finds a voice.' This widescreen spectacular presents a vast vision of creation with nature depicted in all its forms, both tender and terrifying. Dark atmospheric murmurings, gentle pastoral sounds, raucous military marches – all captured in the composer's expansive soundworld.
Mahler deploys the biggest orchestra he could muster, adding a huge choir, children's chorus, mezzo soloist and wall-to-wall brass and percussion.
Its sheer scale means that you don't often get a chance to hear the Third Symphony but you'll never forget it, particularly with Sir Mark Elder in charge. Those who were there for his performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony will remember it as one of the greatest performances in the Royal Concert Hall. Whether you know it well or are a complete newcomer, the Third Symphony is an amazing journey.
Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18+
