"This Manor hath been the inheritance of lawyers” The excavation of a lost Mediaeval manor house at Strelley Hall

Tuesday 21 June 2022 I 7pm
Venue: Arnold Methodist Church Arnold
Tickets: £1 for members and £3 for non members

Construction work at the idyllic eighteenth century Strelley Hall led to the chance discovery of the remains of a much older precursor. The fourteenth century fortified manor of the de Strelley family lay beneath and as excavations proceeded a huge rock-cut moat became visible for the first time since it was filled in after a catastrophic fire in the sixteenth century.

This talk looks at the evidence for this manor, including hidden towers, stunning archaeological artefacts and hidden tunnels!   The speaker, Dr James Wright of Triskele Heritage, is an award winning buildings archaeologist who has two decades of professional experience of ferreting around in people’s cellars, hunting through their attics and digging up their gardens. James hopes to find meaningful truths about how ordinary and extraordinary folk lived their lives in the mediaeval period.
