Last week my daughter was invited to a birthday party at Wheelgate. I have to admit that I had never been before and didn’t know what to expect from this small theme park in the Sherwood Forest area. We took a picnic and headed out in the morning on what was to soon become quite a sweltering hot day. On arrival, all the families seemed to meet outside and it took us a little time to get through the entrance gates as children were measured according to which attractions they were allowed to ride. Once inside, we all almost immediately headed towards an adventure play area and the small roller coaster beyond it. After a couple of goes here and further playing on more adventure play, it was on to the carousel. Now just pausing for a moment, both my two children are four and a half and just under two years old. Everything that we came across was available for my eldest and unsurprisingly we couldn’t do everything with the youngest although to be honest, I don’t think she would have been that interested yet any way. Neither of them missed out on anything and the attractions were really easy to manage. After a spot of lunch, we headed on to the big slide and more adventure play areas deeper into the attraction. We took refuge from the sun in one of the many indoor areas where there was another ride where my eldest could sit in a hanging seat and be whirled around above the ground. We finally enjoyed the trampolines before decided to head off back home for tea. In the end, we didn’t get around to doing everything as there is so much to do at Wheelgate. Speaking to the hosts of the birthday party, they are season ticket holders and it’s easy to see why. The park is perfect for children from around three or four up to around 10 years old with all the different rides and adventure play to discover. This summer, we’ve managed to visit a couple of theme parks and had some great times at heritage sites nearby. Wheelgate for me was one of the best family days out we’ve had and I would recommend it to any young family.
