World War I Centenary Exhibition plans underway

It may seem like a long way away but plans are already underway for a Nottinghamshire Great War Centenary Exhibition at Nottingham Castle in 2014. On Sunday 22 January 2012, 10:30am, Major John Cotterill will be looking to meet willing volunteers at Nottingham Castle to help in the delivery of the exhibition, currently entitled ‘The Trent to the Trenches’. A planning meeting will also take place at the Millgate Museum in Newark on Wednesday 29 February 2012 at 7pm. The emphasis of the exhibition will be to look at how the Great War changed Nottinghamshire socially, economically, politically and educationally together with commemorating the people who made the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict. For any volunteers, training will be available from experienced Great War researchers and museum professionals to help look into Nottinghamshire family history, businesses, regiments, schools and other institutions affected by WWI. Other activities which need support include:

• Design of the Trent to Trenches exhibition
• Assembling the first complete Nottinghamshire Roll of Honour for the county’s war dead and a digital wall of faces and names of the Notts fallen to be shown at the exhibition
• Planning schools events programmes and outreach activities.
• Researching, planning and guiding Great War walking tours around the city and driving tours around the county.
• Identifying and advising on artefacts
• Finding local diaries for the exhibition daily blog

  There is a part to play that will suit you, whatever level of expertise, availability and interest you may be able to offer. The centenary of the Great War is billed as a once in a lifetime opportunity and this pivotal event did transform Britain and the World.
