A quick guide to The Robin Hood Festival

The 28th Annual Robin Hood Festival opens today, so here’s our guide on what to expect if you head to Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve this week. The biggest celebration of the world famous outlaw is a must see for families during the school summer holidays and if you haven't yet been, you need to go. Entry to the event is free, although there is a car parking charge of £5 per day and small fees for archery and outdoor theatre.

1. Medieval stalls, music and merry men.

One of the best parts of the festival is the whole atmosphere that greets you at Sherwood Forest. There are medieval minstrels, merriment and stalls throughout the forest to enjoy. With so much to see and do, make sure you don't miss anything; download the events programme for this year’s 2012 Robin Hood Festival.  

 2. Family entertainment and performances around the village.

One place to check out is the outdoor theatre,  just by the main village area. There may be a small charge for some of the performances but it’s well worth it. Don’t worry if you’re caught up exploring the ancient forest though, there are some spontaneous performances that take place across the site.  

3. Have a go at archery near the Major Oak.

For every budding Robin Hood and Maid Marian, you’ll be able to try your hand at one of the most ancient sports around.

4. Jousting and medieval tournaments.

If you head to the Robin Hood Festival on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday then go to the main arena by the cricket ground for Jousting on horseback. The dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham takes on Robin Hood in a pageant. You’ll also find falconry as a superb warm up to the tournament and the beauty of these magnificent birds of prey is a tremendous experience.  

5. People from all over the world.

The Robin Hood Festival is so renowned and well loved, that it brings people from around the globe to see it, who return year on year. Last year we had a group from Russia visit and they’ll be returning again this year.  

6. Robin Hood.

Quite possibly, the most famous outlaw in the world will be on hand to show people what it’s really like to be a hero and defeat the Sheriff of Nottingham. He’s even been interviewed by VisitEngland to give his own expert insight.   The Robin Hood Festival opens today at 11am at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve and takes place everyday until Sunday 19 August.
