Things to do at the weekend 3-5 August

The school holidays are in full swing and it’s a special time for children to enjoy the great outdoors freely in the summer. Here are some ideas for things to do this weekend in Nottinghamshire. The National Trust are celebrating childhood this year with a whole list of 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾. At Clumber Park you can take part in some of these super activities with their 50 things Friday, and on Saturday there’s a Discovery Pond Dip (not suitable for under 5). Also at Clumber Park, pet lovers will find the Dog Fun Day the perfect way to spend time with their canine friends and this super park has lots of space for everyone to explore. For those of you looking to hunt out Robin Hood during the school holidays then there are Robin Hood Treasure Trails at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve. For more legendary activities then try a guided walk of Nottingham by Robin Hood himself. Tours take place on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There are also drop-in archery sessions by the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest. You could also try archery at venues like the Adrenalin Jungle, Nottingham Dirt Buggies and One4All Group. Advance booking is recommended but a quick phone call could do it. Launched back in July, Nottingham’s major Asian festival, Mela Fest, continues with the Riverside Festival at the Victoria Embankment. There is sure to be a truly colourful atmosphere over by Trent Bridge and a superb sensory experience with the traditional fireworks extravaganza closing the event. This year's edition of the Festival will also include a 'have-a-go' sports zone and a big screen showing the Olympics. The famous Oscar Wilde comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, takes place tonight as outdoor theatre at Creswell Crags. The scenic backdrop will be the perfect setting for a memorable play performed by the Chapterhouse Theatre Company in period costume.
