Do you know what tea time snack a badger is partial too? Or what makes a Robin see red?* These are just two of the fabulous facts, which I uncovered during a recent foray into the wilderness, on a tour with Verdant Wildlife. Verdant Wildlife offers up a slice of the North Nottinghamshire countryside, served alongside a generous portion of intriguing tales, wildlife watching and miscellany.  Chief tour guide Andrew will cater to your wildlife whims, and can help breathe new life into your usual rural rambles. Whether you’re native to Nottinghamshire, or are planning a visit to the county, it’s worth taking half a day to step back and smell the roses (or periwinkle, or evening primrose, dependent on the season). Andrew is not only a keen nature lover himself, but he has the education and experience to back up his claims. His extensive knowledge and wonderfully witty anecdotes help turn an ordinary walk into a real adventure, and he ensures you’re fully equipped with a pair of bins (binoculars) to help spot even the shyest of creatures. My tour with Verdant Wildlife fell on a Sunday in October, which happened to be one of the nicest days we’ve had all year, but don’t worry if it’s raining – Andrew is well trained in tracking down the best hot chocolates in North Notts. We visited several rural locations during the day, from tourist hotspots like Clumber Park to nature reserves including Idle Valley and a few hidden gems that Andrew likes to share with his most honorary guests. There is no guarantee as to what you will see on your trip, making each day out unique. We were lucky enough to see a plethora of songbirds, alongside many different species of seasonal flora and fungi, and a few larger mammals too. Not only are you filled with a variety of facts, but Andrew also offers the option of a hearty homemade packed lunch filled with local delicacies. Looking for the best picnic spots around North Notts? Just see Andrew. We were able to dine al fresco looking out across three counties. He is equally happy to taxi you to the nearest eatery, and leave you to enjoy a meal, before picking the tour back up again in the afternoon. If walking isn’t for you, the trip can be enjoyed completely from a car window, as you are transported through the county in the comfort of a private vehicle, which can accommodate up to six eager explorers. The great thing about the tours is the fact they are seasonal, no two are the same, with many people opting for repeat visits, myself included.

Andrew is a warm and welcome host, and takes into consideration everything to make your day as memorable as possible. He even included a very special surprise of afternoon tea at the beautiful Ye Ole Bell, Barnby Moor – a definite unexpected bonus after a full days birding. The tours are perfect for a range of audiences, from families with eager young explorers, to couples looking for a new adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for a range of tours to enjoy in the near future. You can find Andrew and Verdant Wildlife on Facebook and Twitter, or see our website for more tour information – the tours would make a fantastic Christmas gift. If you’re nuts about nature or are simply looking for a new take on a country walk, Verdant Wildlife is a definite first stop. *Find out the answers to these intriguing questions on a tour with Verdant Wildlife
