Things to do around Sherwood Forest this weekend, 27th - 29th June

With summer now in full swing there is no better time to explore the sites and attractions around Sherwood Forest. We caught up with Debbie Hibbert from the Rufford Tourist Information Centre who gave us her top tips of things to do this weekend. Step back in time at Rufford Abbey Country Park  This weekend, the beautiful Rufford Abbey Country Park will be playing host an event called Britain in the Great War which has been organised as part of the county-wide Trent to Trenches programme. The living history event features military re-enactments including cavalrymen, allies and foes. There will also be military drills, tactical displays, encampments, music, talks and exhibits. The event takes place on Saturday and Sunday and starts at 11am, car parking is £5 per car. Get here early as we expecting a lot of visitors! Discover the glow worms at Sherwood Forest Country Park Sherwood Forest Country Park, which is celebrating 60 years of being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), is giving visitors the chance to find out about glow worms on Saturday, with local experts on hand to guide you and reveal some of the mysteries of these insects. The walk is from 9.30pm until 11pm and is £5 per person. Pre-booking is essential so please ring (01623) 823202 for details. Unfortunately, this event is unsuitable for wheelchair users. Meet the outlaws at Sherwood Forest Country Park The Oakwood Outlaws will be at Sherwood Forest on Sunday at 12noon, 2pm and 3.30pm. Come along and meet these colourful costumed characters as they demonstrate their medieval combat skills in the shadow of the Major Oak. Car park £3. Explore the historic village of Laxton during a Heritage Weekend Located just outside Ollerton, the village of Laxton can lay claim to having the country's last open field farming system - and you will be able to find out more about the fascinating place during its Heritage Weekend. There will be lots to do for all the family with 'spot the sheep' or 'spot the fish' games for the children, trailer rides, arts and crafts, vintage vehicles and medieval re-enactments. Admission is £5 on the gate with under-12s free. Full details can be found on the website. The Festival of Transport comes to Thoresby Park There will be an array of vehicles on display at this year's Festival of Transport which takes place at Thoresby Park on Sunday, from 10am until 4pm. Visitors can expect to see classic cars and bikes, plus classic and performance Japanese vehicles and Fords. This event will be a stunning gathering of over 600 classic vehicles plus an array of motorcycles, including BSA, Norton and Triumph of the British era, to Honda and Kawasaki of the Japanese era. Classic cars will however take precedence with all the great names in British motoring represented including MG, Mini, Triumph and Jaguar etc. Admission to the event is £7 for adults and £3 for children aged between seven and 14-years-old. For details visit the website. Visit a picturesque garden as part of National Open Gardens  Norwell Village has 8 different gardens open on Sunday as part of the National Open Gardens programme. They include a plantsman’s garden with more than 2,500 different plants radiating from a ‘Monet’ pond, as well as 32 allotments of different sizes growing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. There are also walled gardens, water features, sun and shade gardens - in fact something to suit everyone’s taste. The gardens are open between 1pm and 5pm, combined admission is £4 for adults (children free). Watch a Shakespeare play beneath the stars For those who fancy a spot of culture Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is being performed at Clumber Park. Bring along a rug and a picnic and join some of Shakespeare’s best-loved characters as they head into the forest for what turns out to be one of the strangest nights of all time. Go along to a village book festival The Lowdham Book Festival draws to a close this weekend with lots of events taking place on Saturday including an all day book fair, an illustrated talk by Michael Payne and ‘How to Age Well’ with psychologist Sarah Dale.
