With autumn now upon us there is no better time to get out and explore nature's pantry. In today's guest blog, Debbie Hibbert from the Tourist Information Centre at Rufford Abbey writes about what's on offer around Sherwood Forest.  October is the month for foraging in the woods looking for fungi, and unless you are an expert, it is best to do so in the company of a forest ranger. On Saturday 18th October, the Rangers at Sherwood Forest will be going in search of the common and not so common fungi which are found lurking within the ancient woodlands. The walk will begin at 10.30am and pre-booking is essential on (01623) 823202. Prices are £3 for adults and £1.50 for children, car parking £3. There are more than 700 recorded species of fungi in Clumber Park and throughout the upcoming 'Fungi Fortnight’ (6th -18th October), there will be a whole host of activities centred around fungi, from exhibitions and forays to photographic workshops. Meanwhile, on Tuesday 14th October you can join expert Patrick Harding at Sherwood Pines to find out how to identify various fungi. Discover which are edible, learn about medicinal uses and pick up some cooking tips. To find out more and to book your place call (01623) 821459. October is also the month for celebrating the apple, and in particular the Nottinghamshire grown Bramley Apple. Southwell is the home of the Bramley and on Saturday 25th October, the town celebrates with the Bramley Apple Festival. The Minster is hosting a Festival of Food Drink with 30 stands, cookery demonstrations and apple displays. Over in the Archbishop’s Palace children’s craft and cookery activities will take place including apple printing while at Southwell library you can see the Bramley Apple Painting Competition Exhibition, the WI Apple Pie Competition and the Big Draw Apple event. Visit The Workhouse for apple-themed activities including tales from The Workhouse storytellers. Music will be provided by the Minster School Ceilidh Band and The Lord Conyers Morris Men will perform dance displays. There will be refreshments, workshops and competitions on this family fun-filled day out.
