Calling all cat lovers!

In Nottingham, we’re lucky to now have a cat cafe, The Kitty Cafe, which opened earlier this year and is already proving hugely popular. The concept of cat cafes is something which originated in Taiwan and grew popular in Japan, and they are now popping up over the world. The Kitty Cafe in Nottingham is one of just a few in the UK, and the largest one in the country, and since opening it’s become a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike. Research has shown that owning a pet makes us healthier and happier, but not all of us are lucky enough to have our own pet at home, and this is where The Kitty Cafe comes in. Whether you’re in the city for a visit and looking for something different, or you’re a university student living away from home for the first time and missing your family cat, The Kitty Cafe offers a chance to meet and interact with a bevy of beautiful felines. The Kitty Cafe is more than just a place to hang out with gorgeous cats while sipping on your coffee, it is also a fully functioning cat rescue and re-homing centre, meaning your visit is also contributing to the welfare of the cats, meaning warm and fuzzy feelings all round. The Kitty Cafe’s owners, Kate and Oliver, put the welfare of the cats first, and the cats in the cafe choose to interact with you on their terms. If they’re in the mood for being sociable then they’ll be out and about in the cafe, exploring and meeting cafe patrons, but if they’d like some quiet time, they can retreat out the back to their own safe space whenever they like, where they’ll find their own bed, food and toilet facilities. Humans are also given a set of house rules upon arriving at the cafe, making clear how to interact with the cats in a safe way, and ensure the cats are not threatened or mistreated at any point. Thankfully, food and drink are not just an afterthought here. Although people are undoubtedly drawn to see the cats, the food and drink menu is worth of a visit on its own, featuring more than 100 varieties of tea, a wide selection of cakes and freshly prepared salads, paninis, pizzas, sandwiches and pastas. You’re also given a food ‘umbrella’, which can be used to cover your food in case any curious cat should try to come and take a look, and the cafe itself is exceptionally clean, and very comfortable. Kate and Oliver are also very proud of the cafes hygiene rating – they’ve received full marks thanks to their efforts, which include completely sealing off the kitchen from the cats, and having separate staff for serving food and for looking after the cats.
