Nottinghamshire is home to acres of beautiful rolling countryside as far as the eye can see, and if you’re after a bit of fresh air and exercise – or to spot some wildlife - there’s no better way to explore it than on foot. From wildflower meadows to waterside trails and lush grassland to peaceful glades, Nottinghamshire’s countryside has plenty to offer for walkers.
Why not head to one of our fabulous country parks? We reccomend Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Sherwood Pines, Rufford Abbey Country Park, Holme Pierrepont Country Park, Bestwood Country Park, Cotgrave Country Park, Clumber Park and Gedling Country Park.
And you’ll be truly spoilt for choice with our seven stunning nature reserves - Cockglode and Rotary Woods near Edwinstowe, Daneshill Lakes near Ranskill, Rainworth Water near Rainworth, Rufford Country Park, Southwell Trail linking Southwell, Farnsfield and Bilsthorpe, Teversal and Pleasley Trails, and Tippings Wood, between Rainworth and Blidworth – each of which offer their own unique charms.
The astonishing Iron Giant of the Erewash Valley, Bennerley Viaduct is a survivor from the age of steam and coal, the longest Victorian wrought iron viaduct still standing the UK. Given a new lease of life in 2022, the viaduct is now open for walking and cycling, and visitors are invited to enjoy the views from the deck and explore nature on the path underneath. Connected to the towpaths of the Nottingham and Erewash canals, and several local walking and cycling routes, it is a local landmark worth including in your plans.
