The Secret History of Words: William’s talk digs down into the history behind many of the words we use every day and take for granted. For instance, echoes of medieval astrology and medicine can still be heard when we talk about time or personality types.
He discusses unexpected connections between the wool trade and political speeches and reveals some astonishing links between our most personal items of clothing and saints from the ancient world.
He also explains, amongst many other things, why the idea of being comfortable is such a modern concept and promises that you will never think about the word ‘toilet’ in quite the same way again. The talk ranges widely from ancient Rome to the present day, is richly illustrated with images and promises something for all tastes and interests. All are welcome to come and listen to William’s fascinating account.
Visitors can attend the talk at the cost of £3
If you wish to join the Arnold Local History Group you can do so also at the annual cost of £10 and entitles you to attend monthly meetings for £1, vote at the AGM and be eligible for election to the committee.
