The museum are delighted to welcome Dr David Fligg on Sunday 22nd October for a special event to talk about his book 'Gideon Klein: Don't Forget About Me'.
The book chronicles the extraordinary and moving story about the young Czech pianist and composer Gideon Klein. Standing on the threshold of a promising career, Klein, his friends and family were deported to Theresienstadt prison camp and ghetto.
It was here that Klein encouraged prisoners into an astonishing array of musical activities, and where he comped his finest and most compelling music. Using unpublished archives, interviews with Holocaust survivors and photos, David recounts Klein's life from his Moravian childhood, through to his being enslaved as a coal miner at an Auschwitz subcamp before he was killed in a massacre by retreating guards.
His story, along with the compositions which remarkably survived Theresienstadt, is a most fascinating narrative of Czech Jews during the Holocaust, and documents how one young man continued to make music in the face of evil.
Dr David Fligg is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Royal Northern College of Music.
This event is supported by Newark Book Festival.
