Benet McLean Quintet
Genre-busting jazz violin maestro Benet McLean brings his dynamic quintet to Nottingham for a night of grooving hard-bop and fusion. Featuring songs from his acclaimed 2023 album 'Green Park', not one to be missed!
"Like Grappelli, McLean really knows how to swing" – Jazzwise
"One of UK jazz's most unusual and overlooked originals… tonal boldness and improv sharpness" – The Guardian
London jazz violinist Benet McLean has been wowing audiences for the past few years with his exciting style that blends influences ranging from bebop to funk. His 2023 debut violin album Green Park was applauded by critics and radio alike and has been played on BBC Radio 3, Jazz FM, Jazz London Radio, Dope Jazz Radio (jazz re:freshed), Jazz On The Beach radio and further afield, including France and Italy.
A prodigious talent who studied violin from the age of 3, his unique style appeals to even those who don't consider themselves traditional fans of jazz violin. Combining a wide range of influences, he juxtaposes warm, joyful melodies with infectious, driving pulses and dream-like sequences in his quintet's live shows.
He initially emerged on the London jazz scene as a pianist and released a string of critically acclaimed albums on piano that garnered praise from the likes of MOJO, Jazzwise, The Guardian and the BBC. His career has seen him perform with artists including Steve Williamson, Julian Joseph, Soweto Kinch, Jason Yarde, Binker Golding, Jay Phelps, Partikel, Omar, Loose Tubes and more.
Tonight he brings his dynamic quintet to Peggy's featuring some of the UK's top jazz talents.
"Joyful, melodic, rhythmically intense, up-tempo and visceral, taking in hard bop, fusion and points between" – All About Jazz
"If there's one instrument in jazz that I've never appreciated, it's the violin. But that was before I heard Benet McLean" – USA correspondent, Paris-Move
