This course will introduce you to the world of illustrated children's books, focusing on the picture book (for younger children).
This is a very practical course involving drawing, writing and design. It's suitable for everyone from beginners to the more experienced who wish to build their portfolio, and writers who want to learn how to illustrate. It's also ideal for anyone wanting to explore the writing and illustration process so that they can create unique work for family and friends. It is also useful for anyone considering the course Writing Children's and Young Adult's Fiction.
On this course, you will:
- have a combination of group and one-to-one tutorials
- learn about character development, storyboarding, visual language, structure, sequence, pagination and page design
- learn how to create your own roughs and dummy books
- define your audience - get advice on working as a professional illustrator.
What will you gain?
You'll leave the course with an understanding of how to create stories and illustrate children's picture books. This is a very practical course involving drawing, writing and design.

Entry requirement:
No drawing or writing experience is required. An idea for a storybook is useful, but not essential.
Where you'll learn:
You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus. You'll find bright studios and workshop spaces to develop your ideas and create exciting work. You'll also have access to the library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can't reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

SB Tutor Profile: Carol Adlam is a full-time illustrator based in the East Midlands, specialising in narrative art, graphic novels, reportage and children's book illustration. She's a graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and has been shortlisted in the World Illustration Awards (New Talent 2015 and 2016). Carol published several graphic novel projects including The New Wipers Times, Susanne's Story, Ministry of Women, and Amy in Love. Carol is currently artist-in-residence at Nottingham Lakeside Arts where she's completing a graphic novel for the museum called Thinking Room Only. She works with publishers, designers, museums and community groups, and delivers workshops at schools and universities.
