Half Term Activities
The Workhouse
10th - 25th February 2018
Built in 1824 The Workhouse was a means of relief for the Victorian poor. Pioneering in its design and approach it became a blueprint for similar institutions across the country. The Workhouse’s story is told from the perspective of those who lived and worked here. Discover their stories and decide for yourself if it was a place of hope or despair.
This half term there will be different types of activities daily, from crafts to games, something for all ages of the family. On Wednesday 14th February you can explore The Workhouse to find inmates doing their daily jobs and help them work.
Explore the austere and empty rooms and atmospheric work yards with an audio guide and let your imagination conjure up images of the paupers and staff going about their daily lives. All the stories you will hear are based on archive records.
Wander in the restored Victorian vegetable garden, find out about the paupers' diet and purchase some vegetables for yourself from the seasonal vegetable barrow.
Bring the family and enjoy a full programme of living history events, tours and exhibitions. Younger visitors can enjoy our children’s trails and games dressing up and great family events during the school holidays. To make life a little easier we also have baby changing facilities, pushchairs are admitted and we have hip-carrying infant seats for loan.
Visitors will be able to enjoy an extended menu at the new café located in Firbeck, the old infirmary building. This new space will provide additional seating as well a more varied menu which will include soup, a daily hot pot dish and delicious homemade scones.
