Rebels, Regents and Rulers is a thrilling live history experience combining storytelling, historical interpretation, combat demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages. Journey through centuries of Nottinghamshire’s past as costumed characters bring history to life through action-packed performances, fascinating artefacts and engaging audience interaction.

Throughout the day, Robin Hood will guide visitors through a series of narrated shows exploring the lives of some of the region’s most influential figures:

• Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians – the formidable ruler who defended Mercia against Viking invasion and recognised Nottingham’s importance as a strategic stronghold.
• William Marshal – the legendary knight whose loyalty, leadership and connection to Magna Carta helped shape medieval England.
• King Edward I – one of England’s most powerful monarchs, whose links to Nottingham and influence on medieval law left a lasting mark on the kingdom.
• The Sheriff of Nottingham – discover the historical reality behind one of England’s most famous villains and explore how legend grew from genuine medieval grievances.

The day culminates in a spectacular 30-minute live combat show, featuring fast-paced sword and shield battles, quarterstaff fighting, tales of outlaws and knights, and appearances from Nottinghamshire’s most famous legends.

• Meet-and-greet sessions with historical characters
• Weapons and armour demonstrations
• Family-friendly question-and-answer sessions
• Photo opportunities with Robin Hood, knights and the Sheriff of Nottingham
• Traditional archery and axe throwing
• Live blacksmithing demonstrations with Wieland Forge

Legends of Nottinghamshire Family Trail

Families can also take part in the free Legends of Nottinghamshire Trail, collecting a trail sheet from the Visitor Centre and following a series of puzzle boards around the Major Oak trail.

See famous figures from Nottinghamshire’s history and folklore, solve clues, and uncover fascinating stories about characters such as Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Little John, Æthelflæd, William Marshal, Ada Lovelace, Lord Byron and many more. Complete the trail and earn a special Robin Hood-themed reward to take home.
