The Ghost Mill of Arnold
In 1791, John Hawksley and Robert Davison established a worsted woollen mill in Arnold, marking the construction of the town's first factory. At its inception, it was regarded as the largest and most technologically advanced facility of its kind in the country, employing approximately 2,000 individuals, the majority of whom resided in Arnold.
The mill was demolished in 1810, leaving no visible traces, and its exact location remains uncertain due to the absence of documentation on contemporary maps.
A renewed search is now underway; preliminary investigations suggest a probable site has been identified, with archaeological work scheduled to commence in April. This narrative examines the history of the mill, ongoing efforts to rediscover it, and its significance both locally and nationally.
Visitors can attend the talk at the cost of £3
If you wish to join the Arnold Local History Group you can do so also at the annual cost of £10 and entitles you to attend monthly meetings for £1, vote at the AGM and be eligible for election to the committee.
