The Jeffrey Hewer Five
"Hewer, by my reckoning… compares with any guitarist you care to to name between Blaydon, Belfast, Birmingham, Boston, Baltimore or any town/city in the civilised world." – Lance, Bebop Spoken Here
"The Jeff Hewer (Quintet) is a must for music lovers and a wonderful addition to this already vibrant jazz scene in the city. One of the coolest bands in Yorkshire, jazz at its finest." – Steve Crocker, JazzLeeds
The Jeffrey Hewer Five is a Leeds-based band exploring soundscapes of contemporary jazz. This incisive group of musicians from the city's thriving jazz scene play mainly original material composed and arranged specifically for this lineup by guitarist/band leader Jeffrey Hewer. Jeffrey is a jazz guitarist and composer from Toronto, Canada who now lives in Leeds.
Their music includes everything from straight ahead burners to more contemplative meditations, with every piece a vehicle for collective and individual improvisations of the band members. Melodies soar over foundational bass-walks and the bustling percussion with Jeffrey's lush guitar chording and sinuous lines tying the music and groove together with influences ranging from classic jazz to more modern soundscapes. Frequently joined by piano, this band exudes creative energy.
Jeffrey's latest album Five (released July 2023) features five new original compositions and like his previous release, the record is a blend of improvised and composed music, with infectious grooves, tasty swingers and meditative ballads. This record explores the meeting of Canadian and Yorkshire sensibilities within the context of improvised music and the music is a mix of collaborative ensemble playing and burning individual solos from each group member.
