The first in a series of four talks over the winter that take a closer look at The Workhouse and its history. Also includes a private tour with a costumed character.
In this talk, Derek Wileman examines people's perceptions of the staff who ran The Workhouse. Were they really the authoritarians depicted in Dickens' work or has research revealed another side to their characters? Find out about three pairs of masters and matrons and what happened to them after they left their jobs.
