Reinventing the British Classic

The nation’s love for a good old British ‘Chippy’ is undeniable, spanning across generations and playing a part in many fond childhood memories. However, new Award Winning Restaurant: George’s Fish and Chip Kitchen, is striving to change the way we see this dinner time staple, putting a modern and stylish twist on the much loved dish. With the brand being founded in the 1980s, the restaurant owners’ 25 years of fish and chip tasting has led them open this unique offering in Nottingham, ensuring the restaurant is unlike anywhere else in the city and providing a fresh take on the British classic. Distinctive touches such as newspaper menus, beach hut themed tables and a cocktail bar serving British made gin and vodka, mean visitors can take a mini trip to the seaside (in the East Midlands!). The restaurant owners’ close relationship with the farmers, fishermen and distilleries who supply George’s also add to ensuring a one of a kind dining experience. With this unique setting and an ever-changing menu keeping George’s fresh and exciting, it is no wonder the restaurant was crowned ‘Best New Venue ‘ at the Nottingham Food and Drink awards, despite fierce competition from the crème de la crème of the city. Managing Director, Andrew Constantinou, said “The award pays testament to all the hard work that everyone has put into to making our restaurant what it has become in the short time we have been open. It is something that everyone who has been involved should be extremely proud of.” On a recent visit, we enjoyed some fantastic and creative cocktails, including one featuring freshly made candy floss – a real treat. The food was equally delicious, with plenty of classics and a few modern takes on the traditional. We loved the ‘fish dog’ – featuring a crispy piece of cod in a soft brioche bun, complete with chunky tartare sauce and a layer of mushy peas. The ‘proper scampi’ was also delicious, and we couldn’t resist the fresh homemade doughnuts for dessert, perfect with chocolate dipping sauce, raspberry dipping sauce and yet more of that amazing candy floss. Despite making Fish and Chips modern, George’s remains quintessentially British and a great visit for all ages looking for a taste of the seaside, unlike anywhere else in Nottingham!
