Wrap up warm and experience the true spirit of Christmas with the paupers and staff at The Workhouse, Southwell on Saturday 3 December from 4-8pm. The popular Victorian Workhouse Christmas event has become a traditional part of the festive season for many visitors to the National Trust property. The building is decked with foliage gathered from the hedgerows. The inmates are busy preparing for the festive season while going about their daily jobs. The pauper choir is in fine voice and the local brass band, Essentially Brass, provides a rousing accompaniment. Children can create stocking fillers, paper lanterns, decorations and Christingle oranges at craft sessions. Everyone can enjoy hot seasonal refreshments and carol singing. The shop will be open for any last minute Christmas purchases. This year we invite visitors to reflect on the spirit of generosity at Christmas and are encouraging people to bring a gift of non-perishable food as a foodbank contribution. The event is free to members but everyone needs to book as numbers are limited, non-members £4 per person. Please call 0844 2491895 (5% booking fee applies to priced tickets). The Workhouse is closed for the winter after 6 November 2016 until 11 February 2017, apart from the Christmas event but there are still a couple of opportunities to keep up to date with what is happening:
  • On Tuesday 15 November, 11.30am-1pm, General Manager Sara Blair-Manning will be explaining how we plan to bring The Workhouse story up to date based on feedback from visitors and questioning the role it should play in society today.
  • On Wednesday 23 November, 11.30am-1pm, ‘From polish to pest traps’ will give an opportunity to hear from the conservation team on how they look after the building and its contents.
Both talks cost £12.50 including a light lunch and guided tour, please call 01636 817260 to book.
