Celebrate 25 Years of The Gruffalo at Sherwood Pines


Forestry England’s Sherwood Pines is thrilled to announce a year-long celebratory trail to mark the 25th anniversary of the award-winning picture book, “The Gruffalo”. Enjoy the trail until 31 January 2025 at Sherwood Pines!

Is the story of the Gruffalo a firm favourite in your family?

If the answer is yes, then head to Sherwood Pines for a spot of Gruffalo hunting in the deep, dark wood! With Gruffalo Orienteering, beautiful hand-carved sculptures of the Gruffalo himself and all the character friends from the story dotted around the forest, and a brand-new children’s Gruffalo Party Trail that celebrates the 25th anniversary of the book. There is something for all fans, whatever the age!

It’s the Gruffalo’s birthday…

And everyone’s invited to this party. From the Visitor Welcome, head out onto the forest trail to find the missing party items, pick a present for Gruffalo and enjoy woodland adventures. Pick up a trail party pack for £4 – It accompanies the trail and includes a decorative headband to get you in the party mood, as well as a fun activity leaflet, stickers and a keep-sake celebratory patch. It’s packed with fun things to help you and your preschoolers on your way!

Gruffalo Orienteering…

Suitable for children up to 8 years of age, this navigational, map reading challenge is a great way to discover the deep dark beauty of Sherwood Pines as you hunt for the markers in the forest. Accessible for all and with a map that can be purchased for just £1.50 (you’re guaranteed to not get lost!) it’s a fun-for-all family activity! And if you’re a competitive bunch, why not challenge yourselves against the clock?

Gruffalo Sculpture Trail…

Beautiful hand-crafted carvings of the Gruffalo and all his character friends from the story can be found on the Gruffalo Sculpture Trail. This easily accessible trail is perfect for those with littler legs, or anyone looking for something a bit more laid back that takes in the beautiful surroundings.

Something for all….

Sherwood Pines is the perfect location for Gruffalo hunters and lovers alike – but what makes this local outdoor haven the perfect day out, is there’s something for every age. On the traffic-free cycling trail, teenagers can hit the single-track sections, or for those just starting out, the skills loop is the perfect place to kickstart your mountain bike journey. The waymarked walking trails offer a variety of shorter or longer routes for all abilities. Swing through the trees and see the forest from a whole new level on one of the many activities at Go Ape. And if you are a nature lover, discover the whole host of wildlife that make the quieter parts of the forest their home. Transport those little ones on a journey from bedtime story to fresh air in the forest with their favourite character. Tick the boxes for those harder-to-please teens, inclusive days out for the older family members and whether you’re travelling from near or far, Sherwood Pines is the perfect day out for all the family, including the dog!
