"An outstanding soloist" – London Jazz News
"The most beautiful, elegant and melodic delivery" – London Jazz News Acclaimed trumpeter Hugh Pascall brings his quintet back to Peggy's to celebrate the release of their latest album Viewfinder with his band of star musicians of the London jazz scene; each among the finest of their generation.
Having toured extensively together over the last three years, this quintet is confident and assertive in their delivery of Pascall's original writing. Melodic, swinging and modal explorations are complimented by atmospheric, captivating ballads. The classic front line of trumpet and tenor sax provides an idiomatic sound reminiscent of Lee Morgan and Joe Henderson, or Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter, but it's also a lyrical, vibrant and modern take on post-bop jazz, with a unique character.
This is always a busy night so please book early to avoid disappointment!
"Equally stylish and arresting on trumpet and flugelhorn, whatever the mood" – Jazz Journal
"A magical tone.. stylistically, melodically: this is special" – Linley Hamilton, BBC Jazz World
Line up: Hugh Pascall – Trumpet & Flugelhorn James Allsopp – Tenor Sax Ivo Neame – Piano Oli Hayhurst – Bass Jay Davis – Drums
An award-winning trumpeter and composer, Hugh studied at the Royal Academy of Music and at the Paris Conservatoire, graduating with a 1st class BMus in Jazz and LRAM diploma. In 2022 his quartet completed a 20 date tour of the UK for his debut album Borderlands, to critical acclaim. They also embarked on two further tours in 2023 and 2024, selling out the Pizza Express Jazz Club as well as many other significant UK venues. As a featured sideman he's performed and recorded with a huge variety of artists, playing at festivals and jazz venues across the country and throughout Europe. Recent projects include recording with New York guitarist Peter Bernstein as a member of the acclaimed David Ferris Septet and performing in Europe with The Last Poets.
