in//motion
in//motion is an original project spearheaded by saxophonist and composer Luke Chakrabarti. Featuring a fierce lineup of UK improvisers, they effortlessly weave a spellbinding blend of contemporary jazz with the sounds of Americana and post-rock, with influences ranging from Brian Blade's fellowship band to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
Born out of attic jam sessions in Birmingham, in//motion has spent countless hours honing a truly unique approach to contemporary improvised music. Wielding a vast array of influences from the fields of jazz, post rock and electronic music, in//motion deftly weaves their way between sprawling ambient free improvisation and hard-hitting shoegaze-inspired compositions. For fans of Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Aphex Twin.
The band features a fierce lineup of UK improvisers, with both Julien Durand and Torin Davies on guitars, Josh Vadiveloo on bass and Matt Holmes on drums. The group is known to demonstrate an almost telepathic level of synchronisation, alongside a fearlessness that never shies away from the risks needed in music such as this. Between them they share a range of highly impressive credits, including Soweto Kinch, Dreamscapes, Jean Toussaint, Rachel Cohen and Alina Bzhezinska.
in//motion is led by saxophonist Luke Chakrabarti, a Sheffield-born musician currently working in the heart of Birmingham's thriving creative scene. With a focus on jazz and improvised music, Luke is well versed in the lineage of the music, having studied numerous great saxophonists throughout the 20th century. In recent years, he has turned his hand towards the cutting edge of contemporary improvisation, incorporating elements of live electronics into his performances, both with in//motion and with a range of other projects.
Luke is a graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, having honed his skills as a performer under some of the country's leading improvisers, including John O'Gallagher, Percy Pursglove and Mike Williams. Since landing on the Birmingham scene, credits include musicians such as Hermeto Pascoal, Bob Mintzer and Jay Phelps, alongside venues such as Ronnie Scott's, The Barbican Centre and Cadogan Hall.
