Jackie Oates
Winner of two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and treasure of English contemporary folk, Jackie Oates is a singer, fiddler and songwriter well known and loved for her exquisite vocals and expressive fiddle style.
Jackie's heartfelt and beautiful live performances enthral and inspire audiences. Highly skilled at breathing new life into the traditional gems she unearths, Jackie's affecting music includes folk songs and tunes as well as her own songs that so eloquently get to the very heart of the human experience.
Jackie's work as both a solo artist and a collaborator with other folk luminaries has made her one of her generation's most vital folk performers – an expressive and daring performer whose passion for history and the English tradition is matched only by her breathtaking music.
From her work as an artist in residence at the Museum of English Rural Life to her groundbreaking radio ballad Lace Tellings, Jackie's music captures the essence of the folk tradition, ensuring that our history is captured and shared through song, that we move forward while learning from the past.
Jackie will be joining us at Peggy's Skylight for a mesmerising night of folk music this May. Her live shows always include her renowned fiddle playing, and we're certain we'll tempt her with Peggy's grand piano too.
Folk music only survives as a living, breathing tradition when we find new ways to tell stories and to share them in expressive and unforgettable ways that connect with audiences and linger for the years – the decades, the centuries – to come. It's a little early to claim anything for certain yet, but in the immediate moment, it strikes us that Jackie Oates is one of the artists most likely to leave a lasting imprint both on the genre and on her musical connection with all that has come before.
