Moonlighters Big Band

Moonlighters Big Band is the University of Nottingham's premier student-led jazz ensemble, delivering high-energy performances of jazz and funk classics. Known for their dynamic gigs, playful rivalries, and infectious camaraderie.

Moonlighters Big Band is the auditioned big band of the University of Nottingham, featuring some of the finest young musicians in the city. As part of the award-winning Blowsoc, the university's wind, brass, and percussion society, the Moonlighters are a fully student-led ensemble. They deliver rousing renditions of jazz classics alongside hidden gems from the worlds of jazz and funk.

In addition to their well-known Christmas concerts and on-campus charity events, the band has had a busy year. They've performed at the INSPIRE Medical Research Conference at the East Midlands Conference Centre, at Late Night Lindies, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham's swing dance society, and at Nottingjam, a weekend-long celebration of swing dance and jazz.

Of particular amusement was their collaboration with Nottingham Trent University during an event titled Battle of the Big Bands, where members of both ensembles engaged in spirited call-and-response solos, attempting to outplay one another from opposite sides of the hall.

This year's assemblage is led by their musical director and trombonist Sam Toth (a second-year computer science student), alongside their gigs manager and trumpeter Daniel Deane (a second-year engineering student). The group is always a joy to watch, their youthful energy radiating through every corner of the venue. The evident friendships and camaraderie among them add a layer of laughter and charm to every performance.

The band performs at a variety of gigs, balls, and socials throughout the year. The highlight, however, is their annual showstopper at Peggy's Skylight, where the venue is always packed to the brim with family and friends. It's a night that showcases their talent and introduces jazz to a younger generation, proving that jazz never goes out of style!
