Peggy's Spotlight feat Big Enough Umbrella, Eadala and Anya Deja

We're back for another Spotlight event, welcoming emerging musicians to the stage! This month features Big Enough Umbrealla who combine Azymuth-esc melodic grace with world influenced grooves, Eadala fusing jazz with traditional Iranian instruments and Anya Deja who tells stories through music with a folky-soul sound.

"The event's mission is to shine a light on homegrown talent giving them a chance to shine on a stage that feels like home…" – Iulia Teodora Matei, Leftlion

We're back for another Spotlight event, welcoming emerging musicians to the stage! This month we're excited to feature Big Enough Umbrella who combine Azymuth-esc melodic grace with world influenced grooves, Eadala the newly formed ensemble fusing jazz with traditional Iranian instruments, and Anya Deja a vocalist and pianist singer-songwriter who tells stories through music with a folky-soul sound.

Big Enough Umbrella
Combining Azymuth-esc melodic grace with world influenced groove construction – normally synonymous with larger instrumental ensembles like Snarky Puppy – provides the perfect bedrock for extensive and explorative solo sections, more reminiscent of Keith Jarrett's piano performances than any modern trio. In this respect, Manchester-based trio Big Enough Umbrella is a true product of its musical diet.

Their accomplished individual craft and tight onstage chemistry has garnered the attention and praise of jazz greats Jason Rabello (Sting, Jeff Beck), Renato "Massa" Calmon (Azymuth, Marcos Valle) and Dominic Miller (Sting, Phil Collins, ECM).
2024 saw the group perform a regular slot in Manchester's illustrious Matt and Phred's Jazz Club, whilst releasing their second single The Good One. A rhythmically rich and melodically soulful tune, the track was written after drummer and primary composer Jake Brown traveled to Rio, Brazil to study with the late great instrumental funk icon Ivan "Mamão" Conti, one of the founding members of Azymuth.
Line up
Fraser Rowe – keyboards and piano
Dan Orchard – bass
Jake Brown – drums

Eadala
Leeds Conservatoire graduates Dylan Sluiter and Pedraum Agahi present a newly formed ensemble combining a jazz combo with traditional Iranian instruments. Aiming to bridge cultural divides, the ensemble performs a mix of iconic folk songs from across the Middle East, along with original compositions and arrangements inspired by both Western and Eastern influences.

Anya Deja
Anya Deja is a vocalist and pianist singer-songwriter who tells stories through music with a folky-soul sound. Her lyrical exploration, captivating vocals and improvisation have a dreamy ethereal quality, taking audiences to new imaginative spaces. Her inspirations include Nina Simone, Björk, Alfa Mist, Portishead and Kate Bush.

Anya has played in venues across the Midlands including Hockley Arts Club, The Bodega, and The Night Owl. Performing music has taken her to UK cities London, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bristol and further afield, including Los Angeles, where she gigged with indie singer-songwriter Marianne Ross. As well as working on her first solo EP release, Anya currently plays keys in bands Floral Pattern and Halta-d, and enjoys collaborating with other local Midlands-based artists, Alice Weatherall, Marie, Stack Duncan, and Adara.

For the Spotlight event, Anya will be joined by Alfie Elliot-Anderson on guitar and Mylie Noble on saxophone.
