Ray Gelato and Enric Peidro – Toughest Tenors Quintet
A celebration of swing with tenor sax masters Ray Gelato (U.K.) and Enric Peidro (Spain). Ray and Enric salute the classic heroes of the tenor sax, paying tribute to such greats as Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Charlie Ventura, and a whole bunch more of nearly forgotten swing-to-bop era Giants of the tenor sax.
Celebrating their acclaimed album 'With All Due Respect' Gelato and Peidro have a lovely musical communication that demonstrates their differing styles and approaches to the tenor sax. Peidro's smooth lines, clever phrasing, and breathy 'Ben Webster type' sound contrast so well with Gelato's big, full sound and muscular 'Texas Tenor' approach.
Ray Gelato, known as the legendary 'Godfather of Swing' has recently sold out Ronnie Scott's and the Blue Note in Milan for one week at a time.
Enric Peidro's approach is so natural and genuine that he has achieved great popularity, being acknowledged as a real "keeper of the flame" among classic jazz lovers all over Spain.
Their repertoire features blues, ballads, and standard tunes all played with energy and a fresh approach. Ray and Enric don't believe in recreating the past, as their idea is to add a new, fresh take to a classic style of the tenor saxophone. Using tonal virtuosity and drive as the core ingredient of their respective approaches.
Line up:
Ray Gelato – tenor Sax / vocals
Enric Peidro – tenor Sax
Richard Busiakiewicz – piano
Manuel Alvarez – bass
Mark Taylor – drums
