"Captivating vocals" – Jack Smith, BBC Music
"Steve Edwards, the greatest" – Andy Kellman, AllMusic Magazine
As a singer, songwriter, producer and natural live performer, Steve Edwards has carved a vibrant musical niche, blazing some carnival-bright colour through a music scene that too often settles for blandness.
Dusty Springfield once praised the charms of a fictional son of a preacher man but Steve however is the genuine article. Born in England to Jamaican parents, his impeccable Caribbean credentials include blood kinship to the late, great Peter Tosh and Jimmy James. His upbringing however was shaped by the steel city of Sheffield, that half-wild burgh of seven hills, characterised by tough individualism, a gobby kind of wit and fecund creativity.
As a songwriter, Steve studied a broad range of influences from giants like Bacharach, Marley, Lennon & McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Donny Hathaway, Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock to Brit essentials like Elvis Costello via the street energy of Two Tone, Hip Hop & House Music.
Like fiery jerk chicken served with a side of crispy Yorkshire pudding, Steve represents a fertile blend of British and Jamaican culture. As a songwriter & collaborator, Steve has shared his capable chops and deft penmanship with the likes of Basement Jaxx, Bob Sinclar, Cassius, Richard Hawley, Axwell, Bent, Sly and Robbie, Charles Webster, The Shapeshifters, Fila Brazillia, Jimmy Sax, Reverend and the Makers & Moloko. So bend an ear to a man of two islands, who cares more for the beat of your heart rather than any hollow blah or bling. He'll make you smile and make you think, he'll make you dance and make you sing. Welcome to the world of Steve Edwards, come on in.
Essential" – Pete Tong, BBC Radio 1
"Sheffield-based soul singer Steve Edwards serves up his own soul food via Northern Black and World Hold On—the former about the coal mines in South Yorkshire, the latter a massive worldwide dance hit from French DJ Bob Sinclar which Steve Edwards wrote & sang the lead vocal on. His catalogue of songs are from different ends of the lyrical spectrum and in reality, he is a genuine talent with enthusiasm, and pure class." – Graham Clark – Yorkshire Times
